Our section sponsors an annual pre-conference held on the day prior to the opening of the APSA conference. The day-long conference typically is held at a university venue in the host city for APSA and features scholars from all over the world. The pre-conference program features traditional research panels along with expert roundtables and noteworthy keynote speakers, and provides an opportunity for a small conference setting in the midst of the large, and ever growing, APSA meeting. The section also holds an annual business meeting and reception at the APSA conference. During the business meeting, awards are given for best paper, best book, best graduate paper, and career achievement. In addition, the section co-sponsors the journal, Political Communication, a regular newsletter, and this website. Please browse through this website to learn more about the APSA section as well as other political communication divisions and our current activities. The ICA Political Communication Division and the Political Communication Section of the American Political Science Association also co-sponsor the highly acclaimed and heavily cited journal Political Communication and the newsletter, Political Communication Report, an online tri-annual with timely items, such as grants and calls for papers, and more durable discussions of current issues in politics, communication, and research. The Political Communication section of APSA was organized to bring together academics and practitioners who analyze communication and politics. Our members, numbering nearly 500, engage in research spanning American and comparative political communication, communication in international relations, the role of the media in agenda setting and public opinion and the role of the Internet in social and political life, among other topics.
The International Communication Association (ICA) includes 24 divisions and interest groups, each representing a special subfield in the study of communication. The Political Communication Division is one of the largest and oldest divisions of ICA, with more than 700 members from over 50 countries. Our members explore broadly the interplay of communication and politics. Political communication takes place in many settings, including within, between, and among individuals, small groups, organizations, cultures, and nations. Specific work ranges from international relations and comparative work to research on news effects. Intellectually, members do important systems and policy work, as well as critical and cultural analyses. Our work examines the politics of all forms of technology and media, as well as political rhetoric and psychology. The division also has a reputation for methodological rigor. Division activities include a forum for intellectual discussions (see the link on the division page of the ICA site), an annual meeting with competitively-selected cutting-edge research and some of the best attended sessions, panels, and events, and an array of awards for conference papers, research articles, and career achievement and service.
