(1) American Political Science Association Preconference on Political Communication
2008 and Beyond: Change and Continuity in Media and Politics

The 7th Annual APSA Preconference on Political Communication will be held on Wednesday, September 2th, 2009 at the University of Toronto. The theme of this year’s conference is the exploration of developments, continuities, and tensions between forces of change and continuity currently operative in our political communication environment.

In many ways, the events of the last year represent a conflagration of dramatic technological, economic, and political shifts, with profound implications for media and politics. Recent elections have showcased the current state of the art in new ways of campaigning and communicating about politics that have been emerging for over a decade. But these developments have also brought patterns of continuity and stability into sharper relief. Beyond campaigns and elections, these tensions are also evident in broader contexts as political actors of all kinds negotiate a changing economic and political landscape, often through new and still-evolving technologies of communication, while retaining many interests and behaviors that predate these influences. We invite proposals for individual papers and panels related to any aspect of these currents in political communication. For paper or panel submissions or expressions of interest in serving as a panel chair or discussant, please contact Michael Xenos, pre-conference program chair, at xenos@lsu.edu.
The deadline for proposals is February 6th, 2009.
